Dinah Callou Award

The Organizing Committee of the 1st International Forum of Sociolinguistics (FIS – Fórum Internacional em Sociolinguística) has the honor to announce that honorable mention and awards will be granted for works presented in the poster format that stand out in the evaluation process conducted by professors/researchers, members of the I FIS Scientific Committee and/or members of the Sociolinguistic WG and ANPOLL. The DINAH CALLOU award is for the best posters submitted by undergraduate and graduate students. It will be given at the II International Meeting of the WG of Sociolinguistics (II EIGTS – Encontro Internacional do GT de Sociolinguística), which will take place on 28 and 29 November 2019, on the same week of I FIS. Honorable mentions and awards will be given to the students and their respective mentors. The forecast is that the session of award ceremony of the Prize count with the presence of Professor Ph. D. Dinah Callou and take place the morning of November 28, 2019.

The name chosen to title the Prize offered to the best posters in I FIS is that of a researcher who is a reference, for her pioneering and her incessant academic and scientific contribution, both in the history of Geolinguistics and in the history of Brazilian Sociolinguistics. Dinah Maria Isensee Callou holds a Bachelor's Degree in Anglo-German Letters from the Federal University of Bahia, a Master's Degree in Portuguese Language from the Federal University of Brasília and a Ph.D. in Vernacular Letters from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, with a postdoctoral degree from the University of California (Santa Barbara). She is an emeritus professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where she has been working since 1966. She has also conducted research in the field of Dialectology at the federal universities of Bahia and Brasilia. For 53 years Dinah Callou has been dedicated to teaching in undergraduate and graduate courses, contributing consistently to the training of researchers linked to national and foreign institutions.

It is with great joy that the Organizing Committee of the 1st International Forum of Sociolinguistics, held at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ – Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeior), pays tribute to Dinah Callou, emeritus member of the ANPOLL Sociolinguistic WG for her contributions to the development of the research (geo/socio)linguistics in UFRJ and other institutions inside and outside the country.

Our tribute to the professor is, on the one hand, a way for the Sociolinguistic WG to honor the dedication of so many days/years of life to science, teaching, extension and administration in the public, free and quality university – a common practice at the academic life of many Sociolinguistic WG members. And, on the other hand, it is an opportunity to encourage new generations to defend the university and persevere in the work – with scientific rigor, ethics and pleasure – of building and articulating knowledge for Education in Brazil.
